Modern testing for modern stacks

We have gotten into the habit of thinking deeper about one topic on a weekly basis. We pick topics based on anything interesting we read - so the topics can range from 'how to express the value of testing' to 'Dieter Rams' design principles' to 'effective remote work habits'. Employees are guided to spend no more than one hour researching the topic online. The emphasis is on coming up with their own ideas and interpretations. We then meet as a group to exchange ideas. I love this habit and consider it one of the more unique benefits you will enjoy at Qxf2.

Topic: How did you get your start in testing?

13-Dec-2016

This article gives a good idea of who we are and how we have landed in the testing field.

Our thoughts

Arun

I have a Electronics and Communication background. I also did a lot of mathematics. When I graduated I got several offers for RF engineer and one from OPNET that held the promise of using my knowledge of queuing theory. I was hired as a modeling engineer with OPNET. I came up with mathematical models to validate OPNET's simulation models. I also worked for a long time with testing analytics. Somewhere along the line, I also experimented with Selenium and set it up for a new team that I joined. Then when I was looking to switch, I ended up got a good opportunity with Pascal.

Well my career in testing was not by choice. In fact I didn't knew there was a separate field called testing in Software industry. I usually thought developers would them self test their code. I was aware of field called QA Engineer in Mechanical industry as i did my bachelors in Mechanical Engineering. I was aware of some things which a QA engineer would typically do in an Auto mobile field. After completing my BE i did try to work in some different field related to Mechanical engineering like working in a production field and also did some course in Mechanical Design field. But I was not completely happy with my work. Then I thought of taking a serious shot at Software field and did a course on Java aiming primarily to be a developer. One fine day I saw a requirement for a software Engineer in Invenger Technologies and tried my luck there. Interview questions were towards checking my analytical skills and some question on how would I approach different situation related to work. I was able to clear it and ended up being a software tester.

I did my PG and started with lecturing in a reputed engineering college. After I moved to Bangalore I continued my career with lecturing job only. However ,I wanted to switch over to something new. But I never thought of testing. One of my friends referred Qxf2 and I joined as a tester. After I joined here I really enjoyed the opportunities to learn new tools and techniques. First I was assigned to SCW asked to do exploration testing. It was a good learning experience for me. Then slowly started writing the GUI and API automation for SCW. This is how I started my career in testing and still want to learn more and deliver projects successfully. I am also very much looking forward to training the interns on testing.

My first job after college was at Cognizant as a Programmer Analyst Trainee. Testing was a choice CTS made for me. We as a fresh grads had little input into what we are about to become- tester/developer. It all depended on requirement they had. I was glad i was in testing, finding defect in a product was natural to me. I had a different perception on testing back then. I used to tell people that it was so easy that anyone could test any application, I couldn't have been more wrong. I quit CTS after close to an year. I was freelancing as a trainer for sometime and that was when i decided what i was going to do with my career. I was looking for an environment that fosters good testers. I am glad i found one.

After Completing my Graduate i needed to get into IT company as a Software Developer or Software Tester but because of aggregate could not attend many interviews , So though to work as Technical support in night shift and though to join some course like java ,testing or networks during day time. But could't clear in top companies for Tech support job. After 5 interview got into 1 company ,but the job was in Day shift , then though at least to work for few month and to improve my communication skill, but most call which i was receiving was in my mother tongue. So after 2 month about to quit job and thought to join course at that time met Arun and he gave me an opportunity as an Intern for Testing Domain , i am glad to work in Qxf2 as an intern since i am learning about testing and automation tools in detail . Further i will definitely attend interview on testing domain since i have little know and experience in testing field . Thanks for the opportunity Qxf2 services.

I got my start in testing through my 1st company called LogicCMG(CGI now). Earlier to this, I had completed my BE in Telecommunications & was on the look-out for a prospective job. Though I joined Logica, I was on bench for a month and then one fine day was asked to join an Insurance project as a Test Analyst where I started learning the basics and rest of the upskilling on the job. I 'm glad Testing chose me.

I used to play video games a lot during my childhood. Many times, I dissembled and fixed problems with my joysticks. At that time, I was very curious about to know "how things work". Many times, I used to dissemble my toys/gadgets, just to know how it works. I feel, Unknowingly, I started testing and fixing the things during my childhood. During my college, I joined RoBoCoN team, where I developed and tested many robots and electronics projects. I played with controllers. I love both hardware and software. I decided I will work in the electronics company. After completing my college, I joined Next Step Technologies as an electronics engineer, it's an automobile parts testing company. Later on, I got the opportunity to work with Qxf2 Services. And at Qxf2, I am very happy to work on both software and hardware.

In a single word, I got into the field of testing by Accidentally. I never dreamed of working in a testing company, On the other side dreaming of working somewhere in research or electronics stuffs. Pursuing from a top college of Maharashtra, I was having at least 150 companies as an option for choosing my career but , I kept my self-limited to choose for electronics companies only. I didn't apply for any of the software companies. I was waiting for more of the electronics company and I got recruited by a renowned company promising all the students who got selected to be working in electronics and in Pune location. But, in late end of the college, I got an offer letter having no designation but saying "graduate trainee engineer" with the small scale of salary that too far away from my hometown. Standing there I made the decision to not to join the company. So I was left in so popular category of students called unemployed for 4 months. I was assigned a task to mail at least 10 companies daily for the job from my very lucky Elder Brother for me. So I used to do and maintain an excel sheet of the same for who did response, when applied, What was the response etc.etc. And one fine day I was sleeping in bed and I got a call from a Mumbai-based company to work as an Embedded Engineer, It was a telephonic interview. So he did offer me a job and gave an offer letter with joining date. But he was postponing the date every 5 days and finally, he said: "I can't give you the Job, We are having infrastructure problem". So, I rejected, And that fellow called me back right after I got offered from Qxf2, and that Mumbai company fellow offering me with negotions in payscale, And standing there in between to choose for Software vs Embedded career, I choose to work in Qxf2. Now I find that my both decisions to be correct and I am working in a very good company for a QA job that I really like. So this is how I got to land into testing field.

I am from commerce background(Master in Commerce). After completing my diploma in Advanced software technologies i joined in a startup company which had around 40 employees. I was placed in a development COBOL project. Being a small company there was no separate QA/testing team. We ourselves used to do the peer code review and functional testing and send the code to onsite co-coordinator for review. With this background of partial development and partial testing experience i joined Infosys and i noticed a huge difference in testing domain there. There was a separate QA team, all in process, usage of Quality center for writing test cases etc. I developed some interest in testing here and understood that testing should not be limited to just finding bugs and started understanding technology, learned a lot about Message queues and QC. With this mindset i later joined Dell as senior test Analyst where i improved my domain knowledge and analytical skills. Before approaching developers with a bug i used to do thorough analysis on the issue and try to figure where the problem is and then talk to the Developer.
