Modern testing for modern stacks

We have gotten into the habit of thinking deeper about one topic on a weekly basis. We pick topics based on anything interesting we read - so the topics can range from 'how to express the value of testing' to 'Dieter Rams' design principles' to 'effective remote work habits'. Employees are guided to spend no more than one hour researching the topic online. The emphasis is on coming up with their own ideas and interpretations. We then meet as a group to exchange ideas. I love this habit and consider it one of the more unique benefits you will enjoy at Qxf2.

Topic: Qualities of successful testers

27-Jun-2017

A small but useful blog on some qualities of successful testers. Worth to think if you have these qualities and using these skills in order to make yourself better.

Our thoughts

Yes, as the author said most of the people don't select testing as a career. This I have seen in our interns also. Though they have come for internship they always wanted to go as a developer. The author listed some set of qualities needed for testers. Yes, we need all these qualities as a tester. Not only testers, but I believe that all other professsionals need to have these qualities. Then only we can survive in this competitive world. So I started analysing about myself. I feel that I have some of the qualities like empathy, self learners, humility and perseverance. But I need to improve curiosity and stubbornness.

The author has rightly pointed out the qualities for anyone to be successful in his career. I wouldn't bracket it to just testers only. These are essential qualities for everyone. I would add 'attention to detail' as well as part of curiosity. I would call out curiosity, communication, humility, perseverance, and inclination towards learning along with being a self-learner as important qualities.

This is a very short article emphasizing the attributes that would make a tester successful, although these attributes alone would not make a tester successful. I agree with most of what is mentioned in the article. It is common for people to make mistakes hence testers should have some empathy while pointing them out. Being curious is one attribute that not just the testers should have. When given an application testers should always be curious to see how they can break it. It is advisable for testers to be Jack of all trades. Developers practise to be good at a particular language but a tester has to be aware of more than just one language. Self learning,Communication and Perseverance are also other characters that would help make a tester successful.

I agree with the qualities of successful testers which the author mentioned in the article, but with the changing trends in software testing, the tester should have reasonable amount of programming skills with the increasing popularity of Automation and API testing. Adaptability is one other quality, the tester needs to be flexible enough to adapt to different testing approaches. Willingness to learn the latest technology trends in the industry. Developing transparent communication between cross functional teams is critical to makes sure that the entire team is on the same page. Along with stubbornness the testers should have diplomacy skills when dealing with developers or clients. Embracing evolving technical trends and Knowing what to prioritize, are few other qualities which makes a tester successful.

It was a good and short article to read.I agree to almost all the qualities of successful testers which he has mentioned in the article. He rightly says that majority of the testers did not plan to become tester but they became testers almost by accident via a number of different paths, I can say I am also one of them. I don't think there is any predetermined path to becoming tester. I have seen most of the people going for testing as a career just because they don't know programming and they think that testing doesn't need programming or technical skills. But it's not so, a tester should be able to view a given product from different angles, he should be able to explore different possibilities and should have a basic programming knowledge.
